Heneghan.com

Heneghan.com was first set up in 1997, the primary aim was to create an easily accessible area for Heneghans around the world to share information on thier genealogy research and family trees. It has been through many iterations, updates and even periods of downtime since then, during this period the world/internet has changed considerably and, as such, the functionality of the site has also changed.

Below are some guides and information, some Heneghan specific, some more generic, that can (hopefully) be of help to anyone in undertaking family research, no matter if just starting out or further in their research.

Heneghan origins?

Curious? Ever wondered what's the origin of the Heneghan surname?

Surnames generally originated in the Middle Ages. They usually derive from four main sources: patronymics (father’s name), occupations (trade), locations (birthplace or residence), or nicknames (physical features).

Starting your tree?

There is a wealth of information and free resources available to aid you in your research.

Here we have pulled together some of those that can help you in growing your family tree.

UK Census Info.

For family historians, the UK census remains one of the richest and most accessible historical resources ever created.

Each census captures a frozen moment in time, preserving not only names and dates, but the everyday reality of how people lived, worked, and formed the families from which later generations emerged.

The maiden name?

A name is a just a name, right?

A maiden name is a woman's family name (surname) before marriage, it is essential to uncover the name to trace back the branches of the family tree.

It is the connection to her origins and much more than just a name.

Birth Certificates

There are two types of birth certificates. The full birth certificate is a copy of the entry in the birth register, giving all the recorded details, whereas the short certificate only gives the child's full name, sex, date and place of birth and registration district (it does not give the name and particulars of the mother or father).

Marriage Certificates

A marriage certificate is a certified copy of the register entry containing the couple's full names, ages, occupations, addresses, and marital statuses at the time of the wedding. It also includes the date, place/venue of the marriage, signatures of the parties and witnesses, and parents' names and occupations.

Death Certificates

A death certificate contains when and where a person died, registration district, the name and surname, sex, date of birth (or age on older certificates), occupation, address, cause of death, as well as information about the person who reported the death.

Soundex Code

The soundex coding system was developed so that you can find a surname even though it may have been recorded under various spellings.

The result is a code based on the way a surname sounds rather than the way it is spelled. Surnames that sound the same, but are spelled differently, for example HENEGHAN and HENIGAN, have the same code and will therefore can found.
